Michel Coutoux Chassagne Montrachet

All too often in Burgundy, marriage and inheritance seem unpredictable and at the same time felicitous. So it is with Michel Coutoux, who met his wife at university and left his home region of the Loire Valley to join his father-in-law's firm tending vines and making wines in the Burgundy region. Over the last ten years, Michel has been polishing his skills at his father-in-law's domaine, perfecting his winemaking skills and learning the complexities of tending the vine. Happily, Michel Coutoux's father-in-law is no ordinary vigneron, but winemaker-without-peer Michel Niellon, whose ability to coax the extraordinary from Chardonnay vines has delighted connoisseurs for decades.

Michel Coutoux's apprenticeship with his father-in-law has begun to reach a maturity of its own as Monsieur Niellon has started to turn over ownership of some of his vines to his daughter, now Madame Coutoux. Using this source as well as buying additional must from neighbors and friends, Michel Coutoux is painstakingly fashioning extraordinary white Burgundies in homage to his teacher, boss, and father-in-law, Michel Niellon. He has learned his craft well.

The wines are all barrel fermented, using on average one-third new oak with occasional stirring of the lees during malolactic fermentation. Rich but not heavy, concentrated and powerful but not ponderous, elegantly crafted with great complexity and yet delightful precision and definition, these wines from Michel Coutoux remind us of (dare we say it?) the wines of his wife's father. Michel Coutoux was able to add a number of appellations in the 1998 vintage, building on the critical success of his first vintage (the 1997s), which were rated in the 90+ point range by the Wine Spectator.
